Just like people, our pets need more health care as they become
mature. Our pets age at a faster rate then humans, making it
important to diagnose and treat disease as soon as possible.
Diseases in older pets can include:
Diabetes
Weight increase or decrease
Osteoarthritis, leading to painful mobility
Dental disease
Chronic kidney disease
Heart disease
Liver disease
Thyroid imbalances
Cancers and tumors
Importance of health exams
Regular wellness exams are an important part of maintaining the
health of a senior dog or cat. We recommend senior dogs and cats
have wellness exams every 6 months, starting at 7 years of age for
larger dogs and 8 years of age for smaller dogs and cats. Keep in
mind that every 6 months for a dog or cat is equal to approximately
3 human years. On certain visits, laboratory testing, including
complete blood count, blood chemistry panel, and urinalysis is an
important component of their wellness program.
Many of debilitating problems associated with aging pets can be
eased or remedied with early detection. Early diagnosis, along with
your observations for any abnormalities, can successfully extend
the comfort and the life of your pet, along with his or her quality
of life.
